Microsoft's new Windows Live aims to be hub for Web

Microsoft Corp said on Wednesday its next release of Windows Live online services will integrate e-mail, instant messaging, photos and Web applications from other companies into a single platform.

Microsoft aims to position Windows Live with its widely-used e-mail and messaging services as the hub for a growing number of Internet applications and incorporate new features similar to those found on popular social networks.

The strategy puts Microsoft into competition with social networking sites Facebook and News Corp's MySpace, which started to open their fast-growing websites to outside software developers last year.

The new Windows Live service plans to feature a main profile page that updates users to their friends' activities within Windows Live and on more than 50 outside Web services including Yahoo Inc's Flickr photo site and career-oriented social networking site LinkedIn.

"It's a race to see who will work better and faster with everyone else," said Charlene Li, founder of consulting company Altimeter Group. "It's the recognition that you can't be an island of yourself."

Microsoft said Web users are overrun with accounts at multiple Internet sites, each requiring a password and each with a different set of friends. Its goal is to simplify the Web lives of its users who go to Microsoft's Windows Live e-mail or instant messaging accounts.

The company's Windows Live strategy is also central to its plans to wrestle away online advertising revenue from Google Inc, which has used its dominant search engine to expand into e-mail, online word processing and other businesses that compete directly with Microsoft.

Microsoft plans to roll out the new Windows Live services, which will include a revamped e-mail, calendar and a new photo application, in the United States over the coming weeks and then make it available in 54 countries early next year.

FILL IN THE SEAMS

In this third major release of Microsoft's Windows Live services, Microsoft said it aims to fill in the seams between its different Web services to create a unified experience.

Brian Hall, general manager of Windows Live, pointed to Microsoft's Outlook application, which brought together e-mail, calendar and contacts programs into a single integrated software suite, as a model for how it wanted to tie together a loose network of Web services.

He also noted that the latest Windows Live release is focused on creating a more polished user experience, which, in the past, may have been sacrificed in order to get new programs out quicker.

Other new services include an online movie maker program, a "groups" service that allows a group of users to create a joint calendar, share photos and documents or chat together online. Microsoft also plans to increase the size of its free storage service to 25 gigabytes from 20 GB.

Microsoft boasts more than 460 million Windows Live users and analysts said the goal for the company is to keep that audience in front of the company's websites for as long as possible and to prevent defection to other Web destinations.

"I don't think Microsoft is going to steal a whole lot of eyeballs from Facebook or MySpace," said David Card, research director at Forrester.

Facebook has 120 million active users and many of those rely on its mail and chat applications to communicate with friends instead of traditional e-mail and messaging services offered by Microsoft and Yahoo.

Microsoft and Facebook are pursuing the same strategy, according to analysts, albeit from different sides and areas of strengths. Last year, Microsoft paid $240 million for a 1.6 percent stake in privately-held Facebook.

Novel software scans listeners' brains to discern who said what

Filed under: by: Just For Blogging

London, November 14 (ANI): Dutch researchers have developed a mind-reading software program that can scan a brain to decipher the sounds spoken to a person, and even who is saying them.

Neuroscientists at Maastricht University in The Netherlands say that they trained the software by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to track the brain activity of seven people, while they heard three different speakers saying simple vowel sounds.

Telling about their observations, the researchers said that each speaker and each sound created a distinctive "neural fingerprint" in a listener's auditory cortex, the brain region that deals with hearing.

The team said that they utilised those fingerprints to create rules that could decode future activity, and determine both who was being listened to, and what they were saying.

"We have (created) a sort of speech-recognition device which is completely based on the brain activity of the listener," New Scientist magazine quoted Elia Formisano of Maastricht University, who led the group, as saying.

The researchers are of the opinion that recent advances in fMRI's application may someday be extended to identifying what a person is looking at from their brain activity.

"This is the first study in which we can really distinguish two human voices, or two specific sounds," Formisano said.

The researcher said that the study also helped the group make new discoveries about how the brain processes speech.

The team observed that sounds made by any person trigger the same voice fingerprint in the brain, and similarly a given vowel sound produces the same fingerprint, independent of the speaker.

Formisano says that such fingerprint help the software recognise combinations of speakers and sounds that it has not encountered before.

It should be possible to teach the system how to recognise all the component sounds of speech, and then recognise full words, the researcher adds.

"Vowel sounds are not meaningful, but they are language. These are the building blocks of language," he says.

The researchers are presently trying to develop a system that will be capable of recognising more complex sounds without training, even in noisy environments.

A research article on this work has been published in the journal Science. (ANI)

Loss in toss was blessing in disguise, says Dhoni

Filed under: , , , by: Just For Blogging

Delighted with the perfect start to the seven-match series against England, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said losing the toss was a blessing in disguise, for he too would have opted to field first in the first ODI against England.

England captain Kevin Pietersen won the toss and inserted India, only to see the hosts pile up a mammoth 387 for five and in their chase, the visitors wilted for 229 within 38 overs.

Dhoni admitted he too would have opted to field first.

"Losing the toss was a blessing in disguise, we also wanted to field," an amused Dhoni said after India crushed England by a record 158 runs.

"We expected the pitch to help the seamers in the first 30-45 minutes but the pitch didn't do much," he observed.

Dhoni was effusive in his praise for Man of the Match Yuvraj Singh who braved a back pain to blast an unbeaten 138 off just 78 balls.

"After the fantastic start given by Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Suresh Raina, Yuvraj was simply fantastic. On a day like this, the opposition cannot do much. That kind of innings just takes you through," he said.

His opposite number Kevin Pietersen also doffed his hat at Yuvraj and felt England indeed could do little against such a devastating batting by the Indians.

"At the end of the day when you stand up and watch innings like Yuvraj - Sehwag and Gambhir also played well - you just have to say 'well played guys'.

"It was an amazing batting pitch. Little touch and it went for four, you touch harder and it goes for a six. But when blokes played like that, you can only say 'well played'. They played superb cricket," Pietersen said.

Moores unhappy with lack of aggression among England bowlers

Filed under: by: Just For Blogging

Struggling to digest their third biggest ODI defeat in terms of runs, England coach Peter Moores on Friday criticised his bowlers, saying they lacked aggression.

Moores defended captain Kevin Pietersen's decision to field first on a batting pitch, a move that clearly boomeranged with India amassing a massive 387 for five.

Though it was never going to be easy chasing down such an intimidating total, Moores felt England's four-pronged pace attack should have been more aggressive.

"Our bowlers didn't bowl consistently all the way through. They could have been more aggressive with the ball," Moores said.

"We have got some quick bowlers who are tall and generate enough bounce. But they were not aggressive enough," he added.

James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison bowled 38 overs among them, conceding 268 runs for only three wickets.

On the decision to field first, Moores said, "We thought the wicket would do little bit early on but actually you never know it for sure." The England coach said India put up a sterling batting show and Yuvraj Singh, who slammed an unbeaten 138 off just 78 balls, played an extraordinary knock on Friday.

"They played very well for a 380-plus score and Yuvraj's was a very, very special innings. The ground was small too and he was playing out of skin," Moores said.

On injured Ryan Sidebottom, the coach said the pacer bowled in the nets and was gradually getting into shape.

"He bowled in the practice sessions yesterday and today and is getting into the shape for (the next match in) Indore," he said.

LJP men disrupt cinema against 'Deshdrohi' ban

Filed under: by: Just For Blogging

he hate campaign launched against north Indians in Maharashtra had its

echo in Ranchi on Thursday when hundreds of Lok Janshakti
Party workers went on
the rampage inside a local cinema hall to stop the screening of a Bollywood movie.

The agitators were protesting the ban on the release of Deshdrohi, a film on atrocities on north Indians in Maharashtra, by the Maharashtra government. They shouted slogans demanding that no Bollywood movie should be screened in Jharkhand until the Maharashtra government permits the screening of `Deshdrohi' in its state.

Slogans against MNS chief Raj Thackeray rent the air as the protesters went around tearing the posters of `Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi' that is being shown in the theatre. Later, a memorandum was given to the manager of the cinema hall, urging him not to screen Bollywood movies any more.

The screening of the Rajshri movie, stopped due to the disturbances, resumed after about an hour when policemen reached the spot. Around 24 LJP workers were picked up by police and later released.

LJP leader Jitender Singh said if the ban on `Deshdrohi' was not lifted by Maharashtra, his party activists would continue to disturb the screening of other Bollywood movies in the cinema halls of Jharkhand.
